A bomb exploded today at about 10.30 a.m. near the Thirunelveali public market on the Jaffna-Palaali road. At least 16 civilians have been injured, while 3 are reported dead. A Sri Lanka Army (SLA) convoy of vehicles had been passing through, and the SLA troopers had therefore asked the people using the road to stand aside and wait while the convoy passed.
The LTTE has issued a statement, saying that the SLA should be held solely responsible for the deaths of these civilians. It is utterly irresponsible on the part of the SLA to not expect to be targetted by the LTTE in any given situation, irrespective of civilian presence. Therefore, as responsible government servants, they should not have travelled from place to place, and instead should have remained in their camps or bunkers as practiced by Velupillai Prabhakaran and the late Thamilchelvam. If they are unable to do so, they should at least declare the whole Jaffna peninsula as a High Security Zone (HSZ) and refrain civilians from entering it. Instead, the SLA has chosen to travel from point to point, putting the lives of civilians in grave danger.
The LTTE, as the liberators of Eelam, are duty bound to attack the SLA at every turn, and therefore have refused to take any blame whatsoever for this incident. They are saddened by the deaths of these civilians, but have stated that theirs is a higher calling.

And so we’re all set to celebrate sixty years of ‘independence’ – however you want to parse the word or ‘semanticize’ it. Two basic definitions are: ‘freedom from dependence or control by another person, organization or state’, and ‘the date or time when a state achieves its political independence’, which, I guess would be the […]

Fairy tales are overrated. Perhaps I’m just hard to please, but the standard gorgeous prince saves helpless docile princess and makes her blissfully happy for ever more is just mind numbingly dull. The brothers Grimm ones were quite funky, but a little too dark for my taste, perhaps I was too young cos they fired my hyperactive imagination and caused some crazy nightmares. So I gave up and

It was really a pleasant surprise when I received an email from Allan Cox himself. He had stumbled upon Enhance Life, and the email contained several complements about the blog. Coming from a best-selling author, it really meant a lot to me. I was on a natural high that day! (I still haven’t deleted that email. Every time I need a boost of motivation, I read it.)
That was not all. He asked for my address so that he could send a copy of his eighth book, Your Inner CEO: Unleash the Executive Within.
Here was this great, accomplished author and he wanted to send “little me” his latest book. I couldn’t believe what I was reading! It was indeed very generous of him and I am truly grateful for the book.
Allan Cox never asked for a review. However, I wanted to do something in return. I know this is not much, but here is my honest review of the book.
“CEO, um.. I have a long way to go” were my initial thoughts based on the title. All that changed when I read the first sentence of the introduction.
Every time you start a new job, you go back to square one.
Don’t I know that too well!Having switched to a new job a few months ago I could relate well to what he was talking about.
Chapter 1 Goals sets a foundation by urging you to recognize lost dreams and desires. In doing so he asks you to look deeper into our style-of-life.
Chapter 2 Changes prepare you to connect goals to those beliefs and desires. You are asked to traverse the boundary that separates the fear and self-doubt from courage and conviction.
Chapter 3 Facades looks into the importance of continually excavating your organization’s style-of-life. It also focuses on how to discover the overlap between your organization’s ideal and real personalities. Towards the end it talks of the importance of mastering the art of meditation.
Chapter 4 Boundaries reminds you that you are always moving away, toward or against someone or something, and that knowledge has great significance for you and your world. It advises you to distinguish between the apparent and the real purpose of a boundary, thereby giving you the means to define accurately any situation you face.
Chapter 5 Boards helps you gain awareness of the new board accountability that has emerged. You’ll learn how to prepare, plan and execute good board meetings.
It also highlights that you will accomplish more with less control, by relinquishing illusion of control.
Chapter 6 Visions talks of two vision faces. First, vision hear-and-now, and second vision there and then. You’ll learn that who you are as a company now, is the single best indicator of who you are going to be.
Chapter 7 Futures stresses that small decisions confirm an agenda for better or for worse. It helps to articulate your company’s style-of-life, vision, and mission in a fresh compelling way.
Chapter 8 Models suggests that you are like all other people, like some other people, and like no other person. It gives a guide to write your centering statements. That you never reach the wall; the journey never ends.
Chapter 9 Mentors states that good mentoring induces autonomy in others and that mentors can come from any background. It emphasizes that mentoring relies on full frontal contact networking, and positive grounded leadership.
My favorite excerpt
Boundaries…define every situation, even though you often have to peer behind the facade to get to it…If you can’t identify the purpose behind whatever situation you’re examining, you’ll never know its true nature, and…it will continue to baffle you…the purpose of even a simple, everyday object may lie far beneath your initial understanding of it. Take a humble meeting room chair, for example. You know its purpose: to provide you with a seat at the conference. But that’s only its apparent purpose. Look more closely at it…That chair wasn’t built for you, it was built for hotel management that needs to stack hundreds of chairs in a compact space. It’s lightweight, sturdy and stackable; it can be transported easily, stored with others in a closet, and it can work as well in a dining room as in a conference room. That’s reality.
Overall
Allan Cox, doesn’t allow you to just read a chapter and forget about it. At the end of each chapter you will find an “Inner CEO Punch List”. This list helps you look deeper and apply what you read to your life and/or your company.
In its entity, I believe this book is a cornucopia of research-proven tips, techniques, and resources to help you maximize your potential for success. It will change your life in ways that will make you a better leader.

It’s Ok To Ask ‘em To Work (Book excerpt)
In almost every lecture, Prof. Ajith de Alwis mention about reading habit and we are provided with lots of reading materials every day. One day he asked us to atleast seperate few minutes to read other than recomended text.
Today I read national geographic and I found some improtant articles on it. Article on E-Waste was very interesting and it showed how most of electronic waste end up in developing countries such as Ghana. Child labouring, exposing to toxic gases while processing e-waste, using cooking pans to process Lead and many tragic situations were on it. This is the world we are living all together.
All most every people who burn copper wire (coated with plastic) to grab the copper metal do not know that this process may emit Dioxin which is one of the deadliest gas in the world. Small scale processing units of secondary Lead which is installed in poor house kichens uses food processing equipments such as pot, pans, spoons for Lead extraction. After Lead processing shift is over equipments and the whole small scale factory permises is handed over for food prcessing shift which is operated by housewife. This is entiled as “Potential Deadly Practice” by National Geographic authors. But as Chemical Engineering student I do not like the word “Potential”. I think it is a definelty deadly practice.
You can also come across with many things by reading. But we must remember reading is only one good habit. The best habit is reading and sharing with people around the world. Sharing knowledge with people is not a coslty way or a rocket science. Staring a blog on Blogger plateform is more than enough to share what we think and what we know. Some People can think a blog as a stupid thing. But see the BBC web site. They highlight so many improtant blogs on their main web pages. Recenlty they highlighted Kenyan’s blogs (some are blogspot blogs). So do not warry you do not wanted to be web grand master to open up a blog.

A crowd in excess of 3500 Bankstown and Sydney cricket fans were treated to a rare feast of cricket talent when the Sri Lanka national side played the Bankstown Grade side in a charity match at Bankstown Memorial Oval on Sunday 27th January 2008.
Painted faces, flags, spicy curries and brilliant sunshine combined in a memorable sporting and community day for the City of Bankstown as part of its Australia Day weekend celebrations. While the cricket was of the highest standard the day was also about having fun and many thousands of dollars were raised in aid of the Foundation of Goodness and Hope charity which is supported by many leading Sri Lankan cricketers. During the lunch break Alston Koch, well known Sri Lankan entertainer now living in Melbourne, launched his music CD titled “Murali” a tribute song to the world’s leading wicket taker which is currently Number 1 on the South Asia Top 40 while hundreds of fans danced the ‘Baila’ a traditional Sri Lankan dance on the ground during the lunch interval.
On the cricket side of things the visitors were led by Mahela Jayawardene who won the toss and elected to bat first on a magnificent wicket prepared by curator Warwick Starr. Despite some lively pace bowling from Bankstown duo Aaron Bird and Scott Thompson the Sri Lankan openers Upal Tharanga and Sanath Jayasuryia got Sri Lanka away to a half century opening stand before Brett Van Deinsen had Tharanga well caught by Pat Darwen for 22. Jayasuryia continued to attack the bowling before he was bowled by Van Deinsen for 48. Solid performances in the middle order by Chamara Silva (58 no) Kumar Sangakkara (35) and the hard hitting Jayawardene (28) saw the tourists reach 9 – 274 off their 50 overs. All the Bankstown bowlers toiled relentlessly in the searing heat with Van Deinsen the pick with 2-18, while veteran spin bowler David Freedman thrilled the crowd when he dismissed Sangakkara who is currently the number one rated batsman in the world, with a beautifully disguised wrong-un.
The Bankstown run chase got away badly when superstar Chaminda Vaas angled a lightning delivery through Dean Magee’s defence before the locals had troubled the scorers! Solid innings from Scott Thompson (36) and Corey Richards at the top of the order put the locals back into the match but the loss of Van Deinsen and Skipper Danny Waugh for ducks left the locals well behind the pace. Fighting knocks of 19 from Pat Darwen, 31 from Aaron Bird and a hard hitting 40 from Darren Ettridge entertained the large crowd but the Bulldogs eventually succumbed to be all out for a respectable 207.
Following the match Mahela Jayawardene addressed the crowd with master of ceremonies (former Bankstown and Australian player) Len Pascoe and he congratulated the Bankstown Grade Cricket Club, Bankstown Sports Club and Bankstown City Council for taking the initiative to stage the match. Jayawardene said “the playing facilities were outstanding and only surpassed by the hospitality shown by the local volunteers. This match was very competitive and really helped us prepare for the Prime Minister’s XI match in Canberra on Wednesday”.
Bankstown Captain Daniel Waugh thanked the Sri Lankans for agreeing to play the match at a local venue and he was also enthusiastic in his praise of the facilities. Waugh told the crowd said “this is our home ground and we love it, but I’ve never seen it look better than today.” Waugh also praised the Club’s management and hard working volunteers who he said “proved they are just the best in the business!”
The Bankstown Club management also paid tribute to Bankstown Sports Club for providing staff and catering, Bankstown City Council for preparing the facilities to world class standard and Harry Solomons and Stephanie Coory from Kingsgrove Sports who did and enormous amount of behind the scenes work to engage the Sri Lankan community in the event.
