I really wonder, just how they put up with me and why? If I was a close friend, would they be able to tolerate the same attitude, or would they walk away like many others did?.
I remember as a child when I heard my father mention to close friends about his fear of losing me. […]

i’ve been working on this dish for ever. at least four years. the classic way of doing it gives a sharp, strong flavor that lots of sri lankans like — (that’s garlic, chilli pieces, olive oil and butter) — but i’ve been trying to improve on that.
in this variation, i marinated the shrimp in a puree of shrimp (2 to a cup of dry vermouth) boiled down with anchovies (4 small ones to the cup). after letting it sit in the marinade, i added the chilli, butter and for the olive oil, i used what was in the anchovy can.
it was good, but i am not sure its right. (:

Soon we will be using robots for experiments instead of the innocent animals .I’m sure this will thrill animal rights organizations and everyone of us.
Now let me make this straight. I’m definitely “against” the use of animals for experiments, animal testing of chemicals and even cloning. For your information more than 3.1 million experiments are done in the U.K. alone every year!
You may know that I am a robotic enthusiast, hobbyist and a great lover of intelligent machines.Thats my field,I can’t help it. But I’m not insanely obsessed with robots! [Or am I? Just kidding.]
But my question is how long would it really take for an activist group against the use of robots for experiments to be formed? How long will it take for an organization to help robots fight for “their” rights?

In the future will countries have to consider the Rights of a robot more or less the same way they consider human rights ?
South Korea has already written a set of ethical codes to protect robots from being abused by humans.Robotics in US and Europe are also influencing their governments for some form of robot rights.
So may be one day, countries will be obliged to provide social benefits and even health care plans to robots.
How hillarious it would be to see a robot with responsibilities such as voting, family, work, tax, ect!
Or is it necessary that we have a set of ethical codes when it comes to machines? Are we to consider them as digital citizens of our planet….

The long march of democracy in Eastern province started with the liberation of Mavillaru sluice gate from LTTE and restoring the supply of water for the innocent farmers in the area. It was a time when LTTE artillery were even targeting Tricomalee town and strategic Navy camp as a result of shameful CFA signed by UNP leader Ranil Wickramasingha and Prabakaran. The monks of JHU timely influenced the government to take speedy action at a time when new UPFA government seemed to be trapped with the CFA signed by previous UNP leadership. The success of Mavillaru operation not only prevented another attempt of LTTE to chase away Sinhala and Muslim farming community from Eastern province, but also mark the beginning or new democratic era in Eastern province. The next military involment was when LTTE invaded Muttur area displacing thousands of innocent Muslims.
Demilitarization
It was clear military and political leadership that resulted in those limited military operations to continue until whole Eastern province is liberated and LTTE terrorists are chased away. The breakaway Karuna fraction of LTTE played a substantial role in defeating LTTE in key urban areas including Vakarae in Batticaloa District. The Karuna fraction went into extend that they even operated suicide attacks against Wanni LTTE carders.
Development
The government correctly identified that peace without progress can sink people’s hopes fast. The province was in urgent need of improving the infrastructure facilities and supportive services, which are prerequisites for accelerated development. Recognizing this imperative, the GOSL set up a comprehensive three year development plan as part of the Eastern Revival, a programmed to improve the infrastructure facilities and uplift the living conditions of the people in the East. It is again evident that various ‘rights’ organizations backed by INGO’s are no longer interested in developing the Eastern province and it is GOSL and its ministries that are playing a key role in development activities of the East.
Democratization
By conducting the provincial council elections, the government has completed its endvour of liberating Eastern province. Democratization started with conducting elections for local government bodies in Batticaloa district. While JHU initiated the military offensive against LTTE in Eastern province, JVP played leading role in establishing logistical ground for separate Eastern province.
The liberation of Eastern province got the political flavor when UNP leader Ranil Wickramasingha stated that liberation of Thoppigala is mere capturing a forest. UNP’s attitude towards the military operation against LTTE was further evident when UNP media spokesman Laksman Kiriella, in their weekly media briefing, mentioned that “Any bull can wage a war”. It was clearly an insult to brave soldiers who have risk their own lives to preserve independence of motherland and liberation of people from LTTE fascist terrorists.
When the government called for the elections in the Eastern province, UNP was more interested in finding reasons to evade the election than genuine interest in contesting. UNP’s stand was pretty much in line with the stand of LTTE that strongly opposed in establishing separate provincial council for Eastern province. However, UNP could not find a genuine reason to stay away from the election and therefore UNP formed a coalition with Hakeem fraction of SLMC. Ironically, it is only Ranil Wicramasingha and Rauf Hakkem that has signed accords with LTTE leader Prabakaran and both of them are still in the same political trail even after LTTE is defeated and chased away from the Eastern province. When Tamil political parties like TMVP openly canvassed for separate Eastern identity, UNP is still advocating merger of North and Eastern provinces (basis of Ealam).
UNP’s main political theme in the election campaign was demilitarizing of Pilliyan fraction that has been playing strategic role in defeating LTTE in the eastern province and defending the area from infiltration of LTTE carders from Wanni jungle. This has greatly eased burden from the government security forces in the East thereby focusing in operations in the Wanni jungle in the North. As usual UNP became the voice of Wanni tigers and played the role of political psyloc demanding full disarmament of anti LTTE Pilliyan fraction in their transition period when government is still engaged in full scaled war against LTTE terrorists. Although LTTE’s proxy party TNA indirectly campaigned for UNP, the result clearly shows that LTTE’s political stand is no longer imperative among Tamils in the Eastern province.
The challenge of new East
The people of Eastern province have sealed the military victory against separatist terrorism by winning the UPFA in the election. The UPFA list consisted right mix of candidates from Tamil, Sinhala and Muslim communities and the people of the Eastern province has exhibited that they have high hope in democracy. Now it is the responsibility for the elected representatives in the Eastern provincial council to take up most of the political responsibilities in developing their home land and live in peace and harmony.

The news Raids against 'software pirates' in Colombo caught me by surprise this morning while I was going through the news papers. I'm not sure whether similar raids have been carried out in the past but it was unexpected. I'm really glad that such action has been taken to protect the Intellectual Property Rights for software. But where does it lead to? The next target will be the general users of pirated software. But have we educated people about pirate software? Do they know the consequences of using pirated software?
As far as I can see it, 90% of the general public are unaware of the fact that they are doing something illegal. If they go to one of these outlets that sell pirated software they can buy a CD for Rs.80 ($0.75) or a DVD for Rs.150 ($1.3) quite easily. They actually think that they are paying the price for buying the software, which is not correct. The software is actually worth hundred times than that. Even if you buy a genuine copy of one of the proprietary software for its price you cannot make illegal copies of it. Because the licence clearly states that you cannot do that. Most of the tech-savvy users understand what is pirated software. But there is a non-tech crowd in other industries that use pirated software for their day to day needs without realising the fact that they are doing something illegal.
So whats the solution? Are you ready to pay over Rs.10,000 ($100) to get a genuine copy of the software? Or will you look for an alternative software which will give you the freedom to use and share among the others? The latter will be my choice. That is why I use Free and Open Source Software. I think for a country like ours using FOSS is the ideal choice for people involved in any industry. By choosing Free and Open Source Software you have
* The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
* The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs (freedom 1).
* The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
* The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole community benefits (freedom 3).
As you can see you have the full freedom over the software unlike the software tying you down. Its important to make the public aware that for almost every proprietary software there is one or more alternative Free and Open Source Software available. I made my move to GNU/Linux as my primary operating system sometime back and never looked back since then. As I said I had more than one alternative in this case as there are hundreds of distributions for GNU/Linux. I did try Redhat Linux 9, Fedora 3, Slackware and finally settled with Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger) at that time. This doesn't mean that the other distributions I tried are bad. It means that I had choices to make before settling down with what I was comfortable with. Currently I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) on all my computers. I use FOSS for all my day to day needs. I use Mozilla Firefox for Web browsing and Mozilla Thunderbird as my email client. I use Pidgin for Instant Messaging which supports Yahoo, MSN (yes, I have friends there too
) and Google Talk. I use OpenOffice for handling all types of Word Processing, Spreadsheets and Presentations. And the list goes on.
Find FOSS alternative for your proprietary software at www.osalt.com
What I wanted to emphasize is that there are FOSS alternatives. By using it you won't be considered a criminal. You won't be caught by the police for copying a FOSS software in a CD and selling it to someone by charging the cost for the CD. You are free to do so. More than that you can modify the source of that software. In a proprietary software the source itself is not available. Lets not consider that part for now.
It was the Lanka Linux User Group and FOSS Sri Lanka that were behind my move towards FOSS. They conduct workshops, trainings, conferences all around Sri Lanka in order to promote Free and Open Source Software here in Sri Lanka. Specially in Schools amongst the younger generation. So when ever you are in need of any help of FOSS you know where to look for. So make the move now. Don't wait till its too late.

We suggest you start with Wide Bodied Woes. The conversation between Dimi and the Chief is simply hilarious. Well, yeah it was rather one-sided, but hey. At any rate, the Chief appears to be a massive clown. And judging by the rest of the material on that blog, so is Dimi.
We’ll leave you to explore and find all the naughty stuff. Heh heh.
