Rant
I’m back, and I am ranting. I may not be as good as I used to be, but, by Eris, I am pissed off.
I spent five days teaching teachers at Hali-Ela.
It wasn’t easy, but there is a part of me that insists I do such things. I have to test myself and…

An answer to the age-old question…
Not many, I think almost all the girls I have gone out with have mentioned the fact that I do not care or I do not care enough.
Let us take a hypothetical scenario…
Guy (that is I) meets girl, Guy likes girl so Guy interacts with girl in hopes of befriending the girl.
Ok, I will use ‘I’ instead of ‘Guy’
I am the least bit worried about attention. If the girl I like keeps in touch with me on sms during the day and if I have about a 30 minute conversation on the phone during the day, that is enough attention for me.
I am not the type who likes to hang on the phone everyday for more than 3 hours. I would rather hang on the phone for 30 minutes once in two days so there are topics to discuss.
I will not get worried if the girl does not sms me for more than half a day or more. She might be occupied or she might have a good reason for not messaging for half a day or more.
In any case it seems to be as a trivial issue as I do n…

I was on my way to work with a friend and just as we turned from the library an army convoy started coming behind us; army guys waving their gloved hands and guns on a power trip. I am annoyed. WHY do these people’s-choice-gangsters always decide to leave their palaces during office hours? I do feel sorry for the army me, only trying to make a buck. But surely, a little common sense. This afternoon I finally signed all the house papers with the notary! I’m now officially a homeowner and a landlord…
The property is a duplex in the NDG (Notre Dame de Grace) area of Montreal. It has 2 structures that have 3 bedrooms each and a basement. My plan (once I save up more $) is to convert the basement into a stand alone living space and I’ll stay there for a couple of years. The negotiations were tough and lasted over a month, but in the end I was able to get the price lowered by about $30,000.
I wanted to get this all done before June 1st, so I could say I bought my first property when I was 25, but looks like I was slightly late! In any case, I’m very happy and (before you ask) I’ll have to speak to the current tenants before I can get some pics to share.
Anyhow, after the down payment and the thousands of dollars in taxes and closing costs, I’m going to be broke for the next few months, but I believe this is a very good investment!!

My mother was out of the country for a while and came last Thursday. We had a lot to catch up on. Once she finished relating her part of the world, I started giving an update of my life. After sometime, out of the blue, she made a rather alarming comment. Apparently, while I was talking she had counted the number of times I used the word “like” (I am too embarrassed to mention the number!). My initial reaction was to deny it. My mind said, “Yeah mum, nice to have you back!”. As I continued the conversation, every time I said the word “like” she would also say it; over and over again. It sounded funny and we both started giggling. Painfully, I had to admit it. She was right; I was repeatedly using the word “like”.
The problem is none of us say these words intentionally. Some people don’t even notice they are even doing it (if my mother hadn’t pointed out, I would either). It has become a habit.
So I did some reading on the subject and thought of sharing what I learned.
Dangerous Words = Spurious spacers , Wimpy words
Spurious spacers are fillers that we put into speeches to fill the gaps when we are nervous or have to think about the next word to say. Repetitive use of these words can become pesky and annoying.
words to watch out
“Um…”, “Err…”
“Like…”
“Actually..”
“Really..”
“Right”
“Typically”
[Add your word list here]
The next time you are in the audience at someone else’s demo or presentation, keep track of how many times the presenter says one particular spacer, such as “like” or “you know.” You may be astonished to find the number of uses of the spacer, is nearly double the number of sentences delivered.
Wimpy words express a sense of ambiguity, lack of definition and increase perceived complexity.

words to watch out
“You know?”
“Know what I mean?”
“As you can see…”
“Sort of”, “Kind of”
“Hopefully…”
“Needless to say…”
[Add your word list here]
Tips to overcome the habit
1. If you can admit to yourself that you are one of those people who say such words, you can be more conscience in your conversations. List down the words you repeatedly use. Force awareness upon yourself. It might take a while for you to get over the habit. Keep noticing, until you stop!
2. Ask your loved ones and friends to help out. Even though I didn’t react very well when my mother pointed it out, I am glad she did. The fact that she is on my back, helps. (Thanks mum)
Is it wrong to use these words? (My two cents)
I am in the company of my friends; I happen to slip a few filter words into the conversation. Is it wrong? No, I don’t think so. After all, I am what I say, in each and every way. I should be able to “be myself” at least around them. (If your friends find it irritating, you might have to find some new friends!)
However, in a “professional context” using these words can lead to career suicide. For example, when making a presentation or speaking to a client, we are compelled to portray a professional image. Using words like “sort of”, “kind of” might imply that we are not being thorough.
The problem lies in switching from a “friendly” atmosphere to a “professional” atmosphere. After all, habit is a habit! How do you force yourself into awareness in one instance, and let loose, in another instance?
What are your thoughts on this?

OK so I is in a predicament. I have taken steps to look elsewhere for the betterment of my career, and there have been a few positive interviews, actually two.
The first is an almost carbon copy of my current place of work, only better paying and less annoying. The people are supposedly friendly and the working environment is comfortable. This was my first interview in 4 years.
The second one happened soon after, which was quite unexpected since i couldn’t remember i’d even applied. So ANYWAY… I went for the interview, it was a well known sri lankan financial advisory starting something new. So i did the interview and now have two possible choices in my hands.
And therein lies the predicament i mentioned earlier. Do i leave a stable, semi laid back, comfortable job for either a somewhat similar yet higher paying job or for a totally different, stricter and more professional career??
The stricter job offers something different and scary at the same time offering me possible growth. The similar higher paying job allows me to continue my current laid back comfortable less stressful approach with more benjamins but possibly not AS much growth but that’s not certain just yet.
Right there you have it. My quandary. HELP!!!
Please.
